Vietnam is the great underrated bargain of Southeast Asia — and increasingly not a secret. The food alone makes the flight worthwhile: pho at 7am in a Hanoi alley, banh mi from a street cart in Hoi An, fresh spring rolls with nuoc cham in the Mekong Delta. Add in the extraordinary geography — karst mountains, rice terraces, white-sand beaches — and you have a country that rewards two weeks minimum and repays every return visit.

🏠 Where to Stay

Best Areas in Vietnam

Hanoi — Old Quarter

Narrow streets crammed with motorbikes, French colonial buildings, and the best street food in the country. Walk to Hoan Kiem Lake at dawn. The Old Quarter feels genuinely chaotic in the best way.

Hoi An — Ancient Town

The most atmospheric town in Vietnam. Lantern-lit streets, tailors who can make a suit in 24 hours, the An Bang Beach 20 minutes away, and the best cao lau you'll eat anywhere. Go in November for the lantern festival.

Ho Chi Minh City — District 1 & 3

The city moves at a different frequency than the north. District 1 for the energy, District 3 for the French-colonial café culture. The war history is sobering and essential. The nightlife is extraordinary.

Ha Long Bay — Cat Ba Island

Skip the overpriced cruise boats and base yourself on Cat Ba Island instead. Same views, a tenth of the price, and you can kayak the karsts independently at sunrise.

❓ Frequently Asked

Planning Your Vietnam Trip

How long is the flight from NYC to Vietnam?
About 20–22 hours with one stop — there are no nonstop flights from NYC to Vietnam. Common connections are in Tokyo (ANA, JAL), Seoul (Korean Air, Asiana), Taipei (EVA Air), or Doha (Qatar Airways). Qatar and Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong are popular for quality.
Do I need a visa for Vietnam as a US citizen?
Yes — US citizens need a Vietnam e-Visa ($25). Apply at least 3 business days before travel at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn. The e-Visa allows a 90-day stay. Visa on arrival also exists but the e-Visa is simpler.
When is the cheapest time to fly NYC to Vietnam?
January and February (post-Tet) offer the lowest fares — $650–900 roundtrip. Avoid Tet (Vietnamese New Year, January/February) when domestic transport is chaotic. May and June can also offer deals as it's shoulder season.
How many days do I need in Vietnam?
14 days minimum to do the country justice: 3 nights Hanoi, 2 nights Ha Long Bay/Ninh Binh, 3 nights Hoi An, 1 night Hue, 4 nights Ho Chi Minh City/Mekong Delta. Three weeks lets you breathe and add the north (Sapa, Ha Giang loop).
Is Vietnam safe for solo travelers?
Very safe for solo travelers, including solo women. Petty theft exists in big cities (keep bags in front in crowds) but violent crime targeting tourists is extremely rare. The main hazard is traffic — use pedestrian bridges where available and don't assume motorbikes will stop for you.
